Sweet Home Values Education Handbook, by Sharon L. Banas

Because of the widespread interest in the Sweet Home Values Education Program, it was decided to develop a handbook of some of the activities which were implemented successfully in our district. This allowed teachers throughout the district to trade ideas which had been successfully used by their peers. However, since the popularity of this program has spread beyond our district, we enthusiastically share it with others who have expressed interest in developing a Character Education program for their students. The handbook contains activities from all four elementary schools, the middle school, and the high school. There are samples of building programs to enhance a certain character trait or theme, as well as special classroom activities. It also contains samples of district activities that include such things as parent workshops and activities designed to change behavior on our school buses. The handbook has been organized into six values: Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Trustworthiness, Justice and Fairness, and Civic Virtue and Citizenship.

Promising Practices in Character Education, by Dr. Philip Fitch Vincent

This book is a collection of nine success stories in Character Education. Sharon Banas was asked to contribute her story of the Values Education Program at Sweet Home. She wrote Chapter 3 of the book, "K-12 Success Story in New York's Sweet Home Community." The chapter reveals how the program was founded and how it gained strength through the late 1980s, and 1990s.
As character education is becoming a major priority for many school districts, this book of different approaches is a valuable resource."

Chelsea House's Character Education series is being created to meet the needs of U.S. schools' need for character education programs that tie into curriculum in other subjects, particularly history. Many states have mandated school time and even whole months in dedication to learning about character education (e.g. California has named October as "Character Education Month" and superintendents and teachers are directed to try to incorporate character education into regular subject matter.) Titles in the Chelsea House series reflect common themes in character education programs and similar guidance initiatives.
